If you have a basic concept idea for a story you'd like to write, it can help to begin fleshing out the story by thinking about the main characters or main plot points. No matter how small the detail you work on, it can help the overall feel for your story. Places where you can start are:
Thinking about the location where you'd like the story to take place
Writing character breakdowns that summarize their physical characteristics and personality traits
Thinking about scenes you'd want to include in the story
Thinking about the tone and themes you'd like to flow throughout your story
Conduct research regarding any of the information you need to brush up on, relating to your story (if your main character is an engineer, you may want to research the requirements to becoming an engineer, the different types of engineering, the typical workday for an engineer, etc.)
Create a story outline
As a writer, you want to be inspired by anything and everything. Dreams, everyday conversations you may overhear, your reading preferences, your own life experiences or the life experiences of someone you know, documentaries, the news, philosophy or any other subject matter of interest to you
The biggest misconception about becoming a published writer is that as soon as your book is published, it will fly off the shelves, earning you heaps of money. While there are stories that are exceptions to the rule, selling books usually take a smart marketing approach. Readers cannot buy a book they don't know exists, so it helps to market your book on social media or grow reader audiences via platforms such as Wattpad.
